Vera C. Rubin Observatory Begins Cosmic Survey With World’s Largest Digital Camera

2 hours ago 0

New York (AP) — The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has commenced an ambitious cosmic survey, utilizing the largest digital camera ever constructed. Situated atop a mountaintop in Chile, this powerful telescope will focus on the southern sky for the next decade, capturing hundreds of images each night.

Scientists aim to gain a comprehensive census of the universe, charting billions of stars within the Milky Way and billions more galaxies beyond. The observatory’s rapid image-taking capability permits capturing the same sky regions repeatedly. This approach helps identify faint celestial objects previously unnoticed.

Phil Marshall, deputy director of operations at the observatory, stated, “We’re going to see large numbers of scientists across the world working with this data set, studying the universe in a way that they haven’t been able to before.”

The observatory released its initial images last year, showcasing colorful depictions of the Trifid and Lagoon nebulas. These nebulas are located thousands of light-years away; a light-year measures nearly 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers). Since then, adjustments have been made to ensure the equipment functions at the depth and precision needed for the survey across the decade.

The data gathered may provide insights into galaxy formation and clustering over billions of years and shed light on the origins of the universe. The U.S. National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Energy fund the observatory, named after astronomer Vera Rubin. Rubin was pivotal in introducing evidence suggesting dark matter’s presence in the universe. Researchers anticipate the project will uncover clues about dark matter and the mysterious force known as dark energy.
