Cameron Salerno from CBS Sports rated the Pacers’ decision with a B grade for selecting Smith. Although the grade is solid, some argue it could be higher.

“Indiana has had success developing point guards in its system,” Salerno mentions. “Smith was one of the best pure floor generals throughout his entire college career at Purdue and will have a chance to crack the rotation immediately in his home state. He also offers insurance and depth behind Tyrese Haliburton, who missed the entire 2025-26 season due to a torn Achilles.”

Braden Smith, the talented player from Purdue, caught attention for being underrated. His college career at Purdue was impressive, as he emerged as the NCAA’s leader in assists. Scouts, however, were hesitant due to his height, being under 6 feet tall, which is shorter for a modern NBA point guard.

Yet, examples like Jalen Brunson show that size is not the sole determinant of success in the NBA. Smith’s skills and fit with the Pacers, especially being back in his home state, make him a promising addition to the team.
