Mississippi Senate Race Draws National Attention and Big Donors

2 hours ago 0

In Mississippi, the Senate race is heating up as Scott Colom, a district attorney, challenges incumbent Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., in a traditionally Republican state. Colom’s campaign is bolstered by influential supporters including billionaire George Soros’ advisor, Michael Vachon.

Financial Support and Strategy

Vachon, along with prominent Democrats like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and former Rep. Joe Kennedy, D-Mass., discussed Colom’s campaign strategy during a recent call. They believe Mississippi’s political climate is favorable for Colom’s bid.

“Scott can win in Mississippi,” Vachon stated, highlighting Colom’s strengths against a “weak candidate.” However, he identified a major challenge: Colom’s lack of name recognition.

“Once people know who he is and know his story and know he’s running, then they want to vote for him,” Vachon said. He emphasized the importance of campaign funding to increase Colom’s visibility.

Campaign Contributions

Federal Election Commission records show the Soros family has contributed nearly $30,000 to Colom’s campaign, drawing criticism from Hyde-Smith’s camp. Nathan Calvert, Hyde-Smith’s communications director, commented on Colom’s reliance on liberal elites.

Colom’s campaign prioritizes grassroots support, despite facing opposition from Hyde-Smith, regarding his past nomination as a district court judge. His focus remains on serving Mississippi over catering to donor interests.

Senate Campaign Focus

Elizabeth Warren has expressed support for Colom, aiming for a Democratic majority in the Senate. She outlined key legislative goals, including passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, ending gerrymandering, and pursuing D.C. statehood.

As the race progresses, the influence of out-of-state donations and grassroots efforts continues shaping the dynamics in Mississippi’s Senate contest.
