On Wednesday afternoon, two individuals climbed to the top of New York City’s iconic Empire State Building. They revealed a pro-peace banner and shared a public romantic moment. The duo, a man and a woman dressed in dark attire and wearing masks, presented a flag with the message: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”
In a particularly striking scene, the man kneeled and seemed to propose to the woman. They hugged and kissed while NBC New York helicopters observed from above. Following their descent to street level, New York City Police Department spokeswoman Delaney Kempner confirmed that law enforcement took them into custody.
The method of how they reached the building’s summit remains unclear. Notably, the pair managed to scale a 200-foot spire on the 1,250-foot skyscraper, known as the sixth-tallest building in the United States.
An unidentified voice questioned in air traffic control audio available to NBC News: “What’s all the hoopla going on over there?” Another person replied, “Geniuses climbed to the top of the Empire State Building, the top of the spire.” Someone else remarked: “A little hot for that, isn’t it?”
This event occurred as New York City hosts many visitors for the World Cup matches and the July Fourth holiday. Additionally, the city prepares for a potential significant event—pop star Taylor Swift and football player Travis Kelce possibly tying the knot at Madison Square Garden.
