WNBA Commissioner Addresses Player Harassment and Future Measures

During the All-Star game’s press conference, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert focused on ‘harassment’ targeting players. She stressed that the league will take ‘next steps’ to enhance player experience across all aspects, including on the court, off the court, and online.

Engelbert stated, “The racism, the misogyny, the homophobia, the harassment, and threats directed at our players have no place in sport or anywhere else.” She acknowledged that these problems have increased recently but have existed since she assumed her role.

Concerns have surfaced from WNBA fans about seemingly racially motivated incidents, especially involving Caitlin Clark, who was struck in the throat by Alyssa Thomas during a game on June 24. Additionally, players like Chelsea Gray have faced similar threats and insults online.

Criticism towards Engelbert’s management of these issues has emerged, with some suggesting she should be dismissed. When questioned about her future as commissioner, Engelbert didn’t confirm whether she’d still be in her position by 2027.

Engelbert noted the league’s progress amidst ‘incredible hyper-growth’ and reiterated her commitment to her role and strategy implementation, which she believes is effective.

Regarding player security and the role of ‘keyboard warriors,’ Engelbert acknowledged the problem, affirming, “Someone gave me this term, ‘keyboard warriors.’ They are eager to reach our players through DMs or other means. We will address it and improve communication with players.”

In terms of transparency, Engelbert was asked about the clarity of investigations into fines and suspensions. She did not provide a definitive response, citing existing ‘processes.’

Notably absent from the conference were questions about a column criticizing Clark’s reactions to tough play, or a recent GOP letter pushing for accountability over Clark’s treatment.

No questions arose over Engelbert’s allegedly canceled interview on The Dan Patrick Show. During the press conference, she announced the WNBA will introduce a full replay center by 2027.
