Grim Toll of Russia-Ukraine Conflict Reaches Over Two Million Casualties

2 hours ago 0

A comprehensive study has unveiled a grim milestone as the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine marks over two million casualties. This report highlights the significant human cost borne primarily by Russia.

The study, recently released by the Center for Strategic and International Studies located in Washington, details these numbers: Russia, since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has seen a staggering 1.4 million troops either killed or wounded.

Of the Russian casualties, 450,000 comprise fatalities. This figure starkly exceeds United States military deaths in all combined wars since World War II.

Ukrainian military losses are estimated to be between 525,000 to 625,000 casualties. Within this range, 125,000 to 150,000 are reported as deaths.

It’s important to note that accurately estimating casualties throughout this war poses challenges. Russia is suspected of consistently underreporting their fatalities and injuries, while Ukraine refrains from releasing official figures. This study aggregates data from estimates provided by American and British governmental sources, among others.

These figures reflect Russia’s costly efforts against Ukraine. Russian forces are noted to have advanced slowly in many areas, progressing at less than 165 feet per day. Conversely, Ukraine has shown resilience and has gained more territory during assaults in southern regions as of February. This marks a shift after months of defensive postures. Thus, while Russia’s invasion initially gained momentum, recent strategies have allowed Ukraine to regain more territory, somewhat reversing the tide.
