Gov. Greg Abbott Appoints Don Huffines as State Comptroller

2 hours ago 0

Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas announced the appointment of Don Huffines, an immigration hard-liner and former political rival, as the new state comptroller. This strategic move aims to unify the Republican Party by tapping into its hard-right faction.

Huffines, previously a state senator and real estate magnate in the Dallas area, ran against Abbott in the 2022 gubernatorial race. He criticized Abbott for not being conservative enough.

With Democrats optimistic about the upcoming national political scene, Abbott and Texas Republicans are keen on settling their internal disputes.

Huffines emerged victorious in the Republican primary for comptroller, defeating acting comptroller Kelly Hancock, who was temporarily appointed and endorsed by Abbott. Hancock plans to leave his role at the month’s end.

Abbott praised Huffines’ mix of business acumen and conservative values as ideal for the comptroller’s office. He described Huffines as a proven leader who prioritizes taxpayers.

The comptroller role, responsible for overseeing public accounts, has grown politically significant under Abbott. It’s linked to his controversial program that channels public funds into private school education. This voucher initiative is opposed by Democrats and some rural Republicans, and it’s set to begin its inaugural school year soon.
