Cape Verde’s Inspirational World Cup Journey

3 hours ago 0

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Goalkeeper Vozinha had one wish for the World Cup: for his mother to see him play. Not only did he achieve that, but he took part in a historic event. Despite not winning a match, Cape Verde’s performance in their World Cup debut was remarkable. A highlight was their legendary 40-year-old goalkeeper, nearly orchestrating a major sports upset.

Cape Verde’s journey concluded in the Round of 32, losing to Argentina and its star Lionel Messi. The final score stood at Champions 3, Cinderellas 2, in extra time. “We have dignified Cape Verde as a national team in most parts of the world,” Vozinha expressed in Portuguese. “Today, we fought on an equal footing against Argentina.” This fight was commendable, yet the adventure concluded.

The tournament opened with a scoreless draw against Spain, setting the stage for a narrative about the global support to bring Vozinha’s mother to the U.S. for the group’s matches. Following that, two more dramatic draws propelled Cape Verde into the knockout round. In a gripping match, Messi scored a goal and a strategic corner kick during extra time secured the win for Argentina.

The match stretched over 2.5 hours, a contest where Vozinha consistently thwarted the top-ranked team and its exceptional player. “He’s a quality, quality goalkeeper,” noted defender Pico Lopes, who was inspired to join the team via a LinkedIn message—a story itself. “Probably hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves before this. … He’s a legend in Cape Verdean football.”

Vozinha executed no fewer than four elite saves against Messi in the final moments:

  • In the 63rd minute, Vozinha blocked a point-blank attempt by Messi, cutting the angle and absorbing the shot.
  • At the 73rd minute, a free kick from Messi appeared unstoppable, yet Vozinha’s gloved hand deflected it to keep a 1-1 balance.
  • A free kick in stoppage time saw Vozinha drop to his knees amidst a wall of players to make a crucial save.
  • Messi’s shot from the penalty area late in extra time was once again parried by Vozinha’s dive.

Despite their efforts, Cape Verde’s team fell short. “Argentina is a world champion and they have one of the best players in the world, so that in itself speaks of the challenge it was for our team to overcome them,” said coach Bubista. Recognizing their debut significance and dismissing the size disparities—Cape Verde, with a population a mere fraction of Argentina—stands proud of their performance and hopes for more such opportunities in global tournaments.

They will receive $11 million from FIFA for reaching this stage, a significant achievement for the smallest nation by land area to qualify for the World Cup.

Gaining worldwide recognition, Cape Verde’s spirit extended far beyond financial rewards. Fans globally came forward during their World Cup run, highlighting the support earned by this underdog team. “Nobody has to ask where Cape Verde is now,” Lopes stated. “They know where we are.”
