Guardians Edge Out White Sox in a Dramatic 10-Inning Finish

2 hours ago 0

Cleveland’s Progressive Field witnessed a tense matchup as the Chicago White Sox faced the Cleveland Guardians. During the fifth inning, Miguel Vargas of the White Sox hit a significant three-run home run after a challenging 10-pitch at-bat, momentarily giving Chicago the lead. However, following a prolonged rain delay, the Guardians regained control, sealing a 4-3 win in extra innings.

With a crowd of 33,646 cheering, Kahlil Watson of the Guardians emerged as the hero with a walk-off single in the 10th inning, scoring Steven Kwan and handing the White Sox their second back-to-back walk-off defeat.

“It’s a tough one,” said White Sox manager Will Venable. “You have to find a way to score more runs. These guys are battling, they have a really good bullpen, they did a good job, so credit to them.”

The loss dropped Chicago (45-42) in the standings by one game behind the Guardians (47-42) in the American League Central. Despite this setback, Sox starter Anthony Kay expressed determination for the upcoming games.

In four innings, Kay allowed just one run on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. His efforts were supported by Vargas, who connected with a pitch from Guardians starter Gavin Williams for the crucial home run before the rain delay altered the game’s dynamics.

During the delay, both teams turned to their bullpens. Kay hoped for a more extended outing but was sidelined due to the weather’s impact. He voiced concern about the timing of the tarp usage, suggesting it might have been a strategic move from Cleveland.

“I was hoping to go six, seven, eight innings, give the bullpen some help,” Kay stated. “It’s pretty messed up for them to do something like that and get me out of the game that way.”

Sox reliever Seranthony Domínguez struggled with control in the seventh inning, notably walking two batters. Bryan Hudson then stepped in and managed to limit the damage, though an unfortunate fielding error allowed the Guardians to close the gap.

The game remained tied into the 10th inning, where Kwan, the automatic runner, advanced to third. Watson ultimately delivered the defining hit, capitalizing on the suspenseful situation.

Reflecting on the close matches, Vargas shared a resilient outlook for the team: “We are playing really good games and sometimes that’s how baseball works. It’s not the way we want to start the series, but we’re playing good baseball, and that’s all we can ask for.”
