Trump’s Executive Order on AI Oversight

4 weeks ago 0

President Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday directing technology companies to provide the government with oversight of new artificial intelligence models before public release. This marks a departure from the administration’s previous hands-off policy towards AI.

The order comes after extensive debates within the Trump administration about the impact of AI on cybersecurity and national security. Initially, there was a proposed order for a 90-day government review period for new AI models, which President Trump was ready to sign but then canceled at the last moment.

The signing on Tuesday followed a confidential meeting at the White House on Monday involving key figures like Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and former AI czar David Sacks, who had initially opposed the order. The meeting yielded a compromise to reduce the review window from 90 days to 30 days, which garnered support for the order.

This executive order is the most significant regulatory step the Trump administration has taken regarding AI. It contrasts with President Trump’s previous approach favoring minimal regulation to boost American tech firms and rival China.

Under the issued order, technology companies are asked to voluntarily allow a 30-day review period for their AI models before public release. Additionally, it tasks the Treasury Secretary with creating an AI “cybersecurity clearinghouse” to assess security vulnerabilities in AI models.

“Advanced AI capabilities strengthen our nation but also pose new national security concerns that require coordinated efforts from various executive departments and agencies,” the order stated.
