2 hours ago 0

Three people lost their lives and seven others were rescued after a boat capsized in Geneva Lake, Wisconsin, during a strong storm. The incident occurred as extreme weather passed through southern Wisconsin, causing widespread damage.

Undersheriff Tom Hausner of the Walworth County Sheriff’s department reported numerous injuries across the county. The storm brought down trees, power lines, and inflicted damage on various buildings. Although Hausner was unable to provide details on the deceased and rescued individuals, he confirmed that the city of Lake Geneva’s police are actively investigating the events.

Lake Geneva Mayor Todd Krause declared an emergency due to the severe conditions. He noted one person sustained minor injuries after a tree fell, and several areas were facing power outages. Emergency responders managed to address multiple 911 calls regarding damage and individuals trapped in buildings. The response efforts were hampered by obstacles such as downed power lines and fallen trees.

Hausner emphasized the dangers posed by the downed power lines and advised the public to steer clear of affected areas. His agency requested support from adjacent counties and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to bolster rescue and recovery operations.

Geneva Lake is a prominent tourist attraction, particularly popular among visitors from the Chicago area. During holiday weekends, the population in Walworth County, where the lake is situated, significantly increases. The storm impacting the Midwest led to the cancellation of several holiday events and rescheduling of fireworks displays.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Lake Geneva, warning of heavy rainfall on Friday, with persistent showers expected through Independence Day and potential thunderstorms throughout the weekend.
