FIFA Lifts Suspension on Folarin Balogun Ahead of U.S. World Cup Match

Folarin Balogun is set to play for the United States in Monday’s World Cup elimination game against Belgium. FIFA rescinded a one-game suspension initially given after Balogun received a red card during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32.

In a statement released on Sunday morning, FIFA noted, “In line with article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature during this period, the suspension will be enforced without prejudice to any additional sanctions imposed.”

Balogun is a key player for the U.S. team, having scored three goals in as many games. He is the first American to achieve such a record in the World Cup since 1930. The red card resulted from a collision with Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic 16 minutes into the second half. Muharemovic’s right leg was under Balogun’s right foot, leading to an awkward twist of the Bosnian defender’s ankle. Initial review by the referee Raphael Claus resulted in no foul or card. However, after a video review, a red card was issued.

Following the match, Balogun respectfully accepted the decision and shook hands with Claus. On Friday, he made his first public comments, speaking respectfully about the red card decision. The U.S. Soccer Federation expressed satisfaction with FIFA’s decision to allow Balogun to play, emphasizing their focus on the upcoming match against Belgium.

“We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow,” read a statement from U.S. Soccer. “Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”

The team was informed of FIFA’s decision on Sunday morning, and Balogun was notified during a bus ride to training. The decision adds momentum to the U.S. team as they prepare for the critical match in Seattle.
