Potential Replacement for Platner in Maine Senate Race

2 hours ago 0

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Maine, could still be replaced on the ballot if he withdraws by the upcoming Monday. According to state law, the Maine Democratic Party would then have until July 27 to select a replacement candidate.

If Platner exits the race following allegations of sexual assault, which he denies, the Maine Democrats would face a two-week period of uncertainty. Platner has mentioned needing time to reassess his political future.

Kate McBrien, chief of staff to Shenna Bellows, Maine’s secretary of state, indicates that state law doesn’t specify the procedure for replacing a nominee should Platner step down.

The chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, Charles Dingman, and other party leaders have urged Platner to withdraw via social media. While they haven’t laid out a definitive plan, options discussed include a pop-up convention or a statewide caucus to select a new nominee, according to sources who wish to remain anonymous.

The state party committee, with around 100 members, won’t decide the nominee, as per insiders.

Platner secured the nomination in June after Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign, citing inadequate fundraising. Kate McBrien notes that no precedent exists in which a Maine candidate withdrew after winning a primary.

Potential candidates to replace Platner include figures like Shenna Bellows, Troy Jackson, and Nirav Shah. Jordan Wood, who previously ran for a House seat, is also possible. Gov. Mills is considered a less likely choice and hasn’t commented.
