President Trump will soon be featured on a gold $1 coin following an announcement by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The U.S. Mint is preparing to strike these coins in honor of the country’s 250th year of independence.
Treasury Secretary Bessent revealed the initial designs in a social media post. He stated that the coin aims to honor ‘the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism.’
This initiative is one of several efforts by the Trump administration to embed the president’s legacy in American currency. There are plans to add Trump’s signature to new notes and create a new $250 bill featuring his portrait.
The decision to include Trump’s image sparked controversy, given an 1866 law that traditionally reserved U.S. currency images for deceased persons. This law was intended to prevent any semblance of monarchy in America.
However, the Treasury Department defended the decision, citing the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which permits minting coins with designs emblematic of the United States’ semiquincentennial. The department argued that the images reflect Trump’s vision for America.
Changes to U.S. money often provoke debate as they symbolize national identity. The Trump coin is another instance where the imagery reflects a particular view of the nation.
