NBA Investigation Delays Kawhi Leonard Trade

The Toronto Raptors made a significant move on June 30 by trading for Kawhi Leonard from the Los Angeles Clippers. Leonard, instrumental in securing Toronto’s first NBA title in 2019, was exchanged for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and several future draft picks, including unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks.

However, progress on the trade halted due to an ongoing NBA investigation into Leonard’s $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt “green banking” firm. Since September 2025, the law firm Wachtell Lipton has been investigating potential breaches of the salary cap involving the Clippers and Leonard’s deal with Aspiration. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer’s $60 million personal investment in Aspiration adds complexity to the issue. The investigation aims to determine if the endorsement was legitimate or a covert method to compensate Leonard.

Recently, The Athletic reported the probe extends beyond Aspiration. Investigators now examine whether the Clippers paid Leonard’s expenses without reimbursement and if he held another undisclosed endorsement deal. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed hope for a resolution “this summer,” despite the investigation exceeding 11 months. He acknowledged delays due to legal challenges and uncooperative witnesses but emphasized the need for closure before next season begins.

Silver clarified the trade delay was not prompted by the NBA. The trade parties opted to pause dealings until the investigation concluded. Silver noted teams were aware of the risks tied to Leonard’s contract and had consulted the league for clarity prior to proposing the trade. This foresight implies the current situation should not be unexpected.
