Deion Sanders Overcomes Health Challenges, Focuses on Coaching Success

3 weeks ago 0

Deion Sanders, renowned as a Pro Football Hall of Famer, currently coaches football at the University of Colorado. Notably, he is the only athlete to have played in both a Super Bowl and a World Series. Recently, Sanders has faced significant health challenges that proved more daunting than any football opponent he encountered.

In a recent national interview, Sanders expressed his triumph over these trials. “I got my life back,” he proclaimed. Sanders appeared on “Good Morning America” to announce that he is cancer-free. The blood clots that he battled years ago, which led to the amputation of multiple toes, reoccurred last year. He underwent an aspiration thrombectomy on his left leg to address this issue. However, these clots were not the main focus.

“I’m cancer free. I’m good,” Sanders stated. “Great doctors in Colorado brought me through. God brought me through. I’m thankful, I’m healthy. I got my swagger back. I’m ready to go, coach my butt off. And I’m having a good time.”

Early detection played a crucial role in Sanders’ recovery. Discovering the condition early while checking for other issues was pivotal. Blood clots had required surgery in 2023 to improve circulation. But when he experienced severe leg pain and recurring clots afterward, he underwent a clot-removal procedure. This unfolded alongside a diagnosis in 2025 of aggressive bladder cancer, detected during a routine vascular examination.

The treatment involved removing his bladder and reconstructing a new one using part of his intestine. Sanders recounted how this solution led to new challenges.

“Now you’re sitting in the room, don’t know what’s what, can’t control your bladder,” Sanders shared. “You got a whole new bladder. Your bladder doesn’t know you, you don’t know it. You’re peeing in the bed.”

Sanders shared light-heartedly about attending a speaking engagement, worried about his new condition. “The first thing I do is grab my crotch. Because I’m like, oh, my God, I hope I haven’t peed on myself. I didn’t bring another change of clothes.”

Despite the potentially embarrassing episodes, Sanders turned to advertising, becoming a spokesperson for Depend’s adult incontinence underwear. “I don’t have to be afraid to travel anymore,” Sanders mentioned. “I don’t have to be afraid to have a good night’s sleep. I have the product that helps me.”

With health issues seemingly retreating, Sanders feels ready to tackle the new season as coach for the Buffaloes.

“Winning,” Sanders emphasized when asked about his next venture. “And I’m healthy. I got my health back. I got my swagger back … I got my me back. Last year, this time, I’m fighting cancer. Didn’t know which way it was gonna go … But I’m fully back now.”
