Family of Missing Athlete Receives Hate Mail Amid Investigation

The parents of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College, are dealing with more than just their grief. They received anonymous hate mail that defaced a photo of their legal team. Wells disappeared during a trip with friends to Horn Island on the Fourth of July. His body was found on July 6 near the island, leading to an ongoing investigation.

Friends of Wells informed investigators he stayed on the island to catch a ride with another group, though his phone and keys were later found on the friends’ boat. Despite this, his disappearance remains under investigation, with the family questioning the official narrative.

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, posted this on Facebook along with a letter that was postmarked from Denver. The letter included defaced Associated Press photos from a news conference at the National Action Network in New York.

The letter targeted notable figures like Reverend Al Sharpton and family attorney Ben Crump. It painted them as opportunistic, with symbols drawn next to their faces.

Funeral Plans

Nolan Wells’ funeral is set for Monday at the Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The visitation will occur from 9-11 a.m. prior to the service. Reverend Al Sharpton will deliver the eulogy, and Ben Crump will present a “Call to Justice.” The grieving family will gather with friends and community members to remember Nolan.

Benevolent contributions have helped the family, with a GoFundMe campaign raising over $735,000. Standout donations came from individuals like BuzzFeed CEO Byron Allen, who contributed $100,000.

Investigation Update

The FBI is aiding the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in certain parts of its investigation. They’re also looking into “interstate threats” related to the case. Initially, the Sheriff’s Office did not suspect foul play, but the family and their attorney, Crump, are skeptical of witness accounts and believe discrepancies exist.

Crum’s team revealed a video showing a dispute shortly before Wells’ disappearance. He explained this footage complicates the story told by Wells’ friends. In the video, conflict is evident, although a friend, Tracestin Shepherd, claimed his voice is in the recording, not Wells’.

Crum remarked that Wells was one of the few Black people present on the island, underlining a need to question the entire investigation process. Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp is supporting an independent autopsy. Additionally, filmmaker Tyler Perry is covering funeral expenses.

Grand Jury Review

The family’s legal team recently met with Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath. Authorities stated that the grand jury will assess the investigation’s findings once complete.

A grand jury consists of citizens reviewing evidence to decide if criminal charges should be filed. Meanwhile, emergency audio from July 4 surfaced, highlighting a distress call over a bilge pump issue on Wells’ friends’ boat. This audio provides a clearer glimpse into the events but leaves many questions unanswered.
