Family Sues Over Fatal Shooting
The family of Renee Nicole Good, a woman shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minnesota, has filed a civil rights lawsuit. The suit invokes a law intended to combat Ku Klux Klan violence, accusing Trump administration officials of conspiracy leading to Good’s death.
The 149-page legal action names figures such as former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, and Border Czar Tom Homan. It alleges they used “Operation Metro Surge” to target Somali and Hispanic communities, intimidating those opposing federal immigration enforcement.
Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, emphasized the need for accountability. He stated, “What happened to her…is not what America is about. We can and must do better, and the Constitution must be the road map back to decency and the rule of law.”
The Trump administration defended the agent’s actions, claiming Good used her vehicle as a weapon, striking the agent before he responded. Contacts were made with the White House and Department of Homeland Security for comments.
Invoking the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871
The lawsuit highlights the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, allowing civil action against conspiracies that deny equal protection under law. The plaintiffs argue its relevance, citing masked agents allegedly performing discriminatory actions.
According to the complaint, the act addresses scenarios where masked individuals strip targeted groups of equal legal protection. The legal action is part of broader efforts challenging the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The lawsuit provides a detailed account of the January 7 events. It states Good, a 37-year-old mother, warned neighbors in Minneapolis of the operation and was subsequently surrounded by unmarked vehicles.
An ICE agent allegedly filmed Good, who spoke to him, expressing non-confrontational sentiments. Despite her request for agents to bypass her vehicle, they demanded she exit. Good moved her vehicle away when the agent fired, resulting in her death.
The complaint includes allegations of verbal abuse and subsequent denial of medical assistance by agents after the shooting.
Allegations Against Trump Administration Officials
The lawsuit implicates Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem, and Tom Homan. It claims Miller directed operations targeting Somali groups, accusing him of instigating confrontations with observers of the operation.
Noem is accused of promoting policies allowing masked enforcement and creating high-profile enforcement actions. The complaint states she also embedded conservative influencers to document operations.
Homan allegedly orchestrated aggressive citywide operations, publicly advocating for enforcement in sanctuary cities. He later acted to ease tensions in Minneapolis, withdrawing agents post-incident.
