Teen’s Tragic Death Highlights Community Concerns

Lasiah Palmer, a 15-year-old from the West Side of Chicago, was one of the few teenagers in his neighborhood who still adhered to a curfew. His family worked hard to ensure his safety and keep him away from street violence. On Tuesday night, he was at home, enjoying the summer air from his back porch, a place where he should have been safe.

Billeka Palmer, his cousin, stated that being at home should have been a luxury that Lasiah was awarded, not something that ended in tragedy. Known affectionately as “Spyda,” Lasiah was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while on a third-floor patio. He was discovered bleeding and unconscious. Officers responded to a call shortly after 1 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Jackson Boulevard, finding him unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his head. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office later ruled his death a homicide. According to an initial police report, Lasiah had come home with two friends after swimming at a nearby pool. After showering, he was believed to have watched TV in his mother’s bedroom. His mother returned home just before 1 a.m. to the horrifying scene of her son bleeding on the porch. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and commotion an hour or two before Lasiah was found.

According to his cousin, Lasiah was a quiet and introverted boy who preferred small gatherings, especially enjoying time with his mother and younger brother. He had a passion for sports and games and was eager to start high school at Rowe-Clark Math and Science Academy. Lasiah was due to begin ninth grade next month, as confirmed by a Noble Schools spokesperson.

The last time Billeka Palmer saw her cousin was two months prior, on Mother’s Day, during a family gathering. She emphasized that Lasiah’s mother, her first cousin, worked tirelessly to protect her sons from street culture and prevent them from becoming statistics. Sadly, the Austin community, where they reside, leads the city in homicides, with 18 on record as of Saturday. Chicago has seen 233 homicides in 2026 so far.

Billeka mentioned that the family often engaged in open conversations about the challenges faced by young Black men. She expressed shock and devastation at the intrusion of violence into their lives. Billeka stressed the innocence that children like Lasiah embody, which often gets overshadowed by stereotypes portrayed in culture and media.

In the wake of this tragedy, the family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral and memorial costs. Over $3,400 has been raised so far. Diamond Dortch, another cousin, wrote on the fundraising page that Lasiah was much more than a name. He was a beloved son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, whose joyful spirit touched many. His untimely death has left a family and community grappling with this immense loss.

No new information about the shooting has been made available as detectives from Harrison Area (Area 4) continue their investigation.
