Punch the Orphaned Monkey Celebrates First Birthday with Global Support

In Ichikawa, Japan, Punch, the orphaned monkey who captured many hearts, celebrated his first birthday. This young macaque first became popular for clinging to an orangutan plushie after being abandoned by his mother. Now he has formed bonds with fellow monkeys and no longer relies on the toy.

Punch was left by his mother shortly after birth, likely due to exhaustion. Zookeepers at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Garden helped him by providing care and the plush toy to improve his gripping skills, crucial for survival in macaques.

Currently, Punch blends in with the other monkeys. Despite this, he continues to draw large crowds and media attention. According to Takashi Yasunaga, the zoo’s head, Punch received around 2,500 birthday cards from admirers worldwide. Cards and messages cover the walls of the indoor Punch birthday exhibit, where a video of his life story plays for visitors.

“As Punch struggled daily to survive, his keepers did everything they could, with support from other staff,” Yasunaga recalled.

In January, after six months of individual care, Punch joined approximately 50 monkeys in the zoo enclosure. This transition marked the beginning of his fame. Images of Punch and his plush toy circulated on social media in February, quickly gaining attention. The zoo reported tens of thousands of visitors, half from overseas.

When initially rejected by other monkeys, Punch turned to his toy for comfort. Fans supported him with encouraging messages like #HangInTherePunch on social media. His journey resonated with many, striking an emotional chord due to his perseverance.

Visitors like Kumi Ishizawa were inspired by Punch’s story. She discovered him online and set a personal goal to visit, which she accomplished after recovering from an illness. Ishizawa expressed joy at seeing Punch in person and thanked him for motivating her recovery.

Yeye Lights, another visitor, became a dedicated Punch fan through her daughter in the Philippines. Now a frequent zoo visitor with an annual pass, she celebrated Punch’s birthday with a cake, expressing gratitude to his carers.
