Netanyahu Accuses Mamdani of Creating Climate of Hate and Fear

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of inciting hatred and fear among Jewish Americans in New York City. This follows Mamdani’s remarks calling Netanyahu a ‘war criminal’ and suggesting his arrest.

Amidst these tensions, New York State Assemblyman Michael Novakhov has urged the U.S. Department of Justice to launch a civil rights investigation into Mamdani. This call for action follows two stabbings on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, which are considered potential hate crimes. Novakhov, who represents Brooklyn’s District 45, spoke at an End Jew Hatred rally, emphasizing the need for federal intervention to protect Jewish New Yorkers.

If the DOJ stepped in to protect Jewish students at Columbia, it must now step in to protect Jewish New Yorkers,” Novakhov stated in an Instagram post, which included a video of his announcement.

The suspect, Raul Morales, 51, allegedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” and is accused of stabbing two men. The victims, Chok Sung, 57, and Moshe Grunhaus, 50, are reported to be in stable condition. The incident coincided with Tisha B’Av, a significant day of mourning in the Jewish calendar, in a neighborhood with a notable Jewish population.

Novakhov plans to send a formal letter to the DOJ, urging an investigation into any alleged anti-Jewish sentiment from Mamdani. Attempts to reach Mamdani’s office for comments were unsuccessful.

The Jewish community has voiced concerns over Mamdani’s statements about Netanyahu, which included labeling him an ‘architect of genocide’ against Palestinians. Mamdani also mentioned the International Criminal Court’s warrant against Netanyahu, though he acknowledged the ICC’s lack of jurisdiction in the U.S.

Jewish leaders emphasize that community members should not live in fear or hide their identities. They demand that authorities address their concerns and uphold the law.
