An armed individual was apprehended on Monday after driving to a security barricade outside the U.S. Capitol. This incident prompted a police investigation and briefly shut down part of the Capitol grounds.

U.S. Capitol Police reported the arrest at the North Barricade upon discovering the individual possessed a firearm. Firearms are strictly forbidden on Capitol Grounds, leading to an immediate closure of the area for investigation purposes.

Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol, stated Capitol Police.

The authorities have yet to identify the suspect or disclose any charges related to the incident.

Officers remained at the scene throughout Monday afternoon, removing items from a Ford Bronco positioned diagonally in front of the barricade. Observers noted the extracted items appeared to include water bottles and various possessions.

A dog found inside the vehicle was safely extricated and taken away in an SPCA vehicle. The North Barricade stayed closed as the investigation progressed.
