The Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest, held in Berlin on July 25-26, was a celebration of Square Enix’s popular MMO with 15 million registered players. The event promised new game additions, cosplay competitions, exclusive merchandise, and an end concert that thrilled fans. Despite never playing Final Fantasy XIV, the excitement of 10,000 attendees was infectious.
The Opening Ceremony
Producer and director Naoki Yoshida started the festival with an extensive keynote presentation spanning nearly three hours. Dressed in fantasy armor, Yoshida captivated the audience in a packed hub27 at Messe Berlin. Fans reacted enthusiastically to teasers, though their significance was lost on newcomers like me.
Visiting the Show Floor
Experiencing the show floor for the first time felt surreal. Diverse attractions included tattoo parlors, dance floors, target practice, and carnival games. Themed areas like a Wild West zone and a ‘70s disco appealed to fans familiar with these virtual worlds.
Evercold Expansion Reveal
The trailer for the new Final Fantasy XIV expansion, Evercold, generated buzz. Scheduled for a January 2027 release, it features new realms, elemental dangers, and a colossal evil coal. Players will navigate these areas using airships, confronting fresh challenges and earning valuable rewards.
The Piano Concert
The first musical performance, a piano concert by Keiko, was stunning. Fans enjoyed live renditions of game tracks, including the poignant “What Angel Wakes Me.” The orchestrated audience participation highlighted the importance of music in the game.
Introducing New Jobs
The Evercold expansion introduces two new Jobs: a ranged DPS and a formidable tank equipped with twin shields. Understanding character classes helped me appreciate the excitement surrounding their unveiling.
The Primals’ Performance
The festival concluded with a dynamic performance by the rock band The Primals. The setlist included game songs and diverse musical styles, from rap-rock tracks to disco singalongs. Notable was Koji Fox, the polite keynote translator, transforming into the band’s energetic frontman.
A Free Discovery
The Fan Fest revealed that the base game and its extensive content are free to download. While subscriptions and premium items come with additional costs, the chance to explore the game without an initial fee was appealing. I plan to venture into Eorzea soon.
