Dr. Phil McGraw recently shared his thoughts on the Lindsay Clancy trial after the judge declared a mistrial. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision regarding the case where Clancy admitted to strangling her three children in 2023. The defense claims Clancy, who is 36 years old, was affected by postpartum psychosis and not in control of her actions.
Speaking to Fox News anchor Aishah Hasnie, McGraw emphasized the tragic loss of Clancy’s children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan. “Three innocent children lost their lives,” said McGraw, stressing the gravity of the situation.
The Impact of Mental Illness in Court
McGraw expressed concerns about how mental illness is portrayed in court. He stated that it often becomes a political issue rather than focusing on actual events. Despite the mistrial, McGraw is confident that Clancy will face accountability, whether or not she is found criminally responsible. He remarked that Clancy is likely to live in a psychiatric facility if deemed not guilty due to mental illness.
Highlighting the power of psychosis, McGraw explained that it can drastically affect a person’s life, comparing it to the impact of a brain tumor. He clarified that while this is not an excuse, understanding the cause is essential.
The Differences in Mental Health Conditions
He emphasized the critical differences between postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, calling the latter a psychiatric emergency requiring immediate hospitalization. McGraw criticized the handling of Clancy’s situation, suggesting it was not treated as the emergency it was.
Cultural Lessons and Prevention
McGraw cautioned against using Clancy as a “heroine,” instead suggesting the need for cultural lessons. He underscored the failure to address Clancy’s pleas for help and the importance of understanding mental illness as a serious matter. He warned of potential “copycat” effects and highlighted the importance of recognizing “red flags” to prevent future tragedies.
McGraw appealed to mothers, encouraging them to seek help without feeling that it is a sign of weakness.
