Nebraska Congressional Nominee Denise Powell Criticizes Gender Transition Restrictions

Introduction: Denise Powell, the Democratic nominee for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, has publicly opposed Nebraska’s law restricting gender transition procedures for minors. Her stance is detailed through social media posts that have sparked criticism.

Opposition to LB 574: Powell used Facebook and TikTok to express her opposition to LB 574, also known as the ‘Let Them Grow Act.’ This law prohibits gender transition procedures for minors and regulates the use of puberty blockers and hormone treatments for anyone under 19. In March 2023, she encouraged Nebraskans to contact state senators and join her at the Capitol during debates over the bill, wearing ‘PROTECT TRANS KIDS’ shirts.

“Today is the final day of the first round of floor debate on LB 574, a bill that would prohibit and punish healthcare providers from providing gender affirming care to children under the age of 19,” Powell stated.

Other States Passing Similar Laws: Powell emphasized that similar laws were being enacted in Iowa, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and urged Nebraska to set an example by rejecting such discriminatory practices. She commended lawmakers who opposed the bill and encouraged supporters to express their support via calls or tweets to their senators.

“Trans people belong in Nebraska and everywhere and we will never ever stop fighting for their right to exist and thrive,” she wrote.

Social Media Advocacy: On TikTok, Powell criticized the legislation through a video indicating her disapproval of making gender-affirming care inaccessible. The video highlighted protest scenes and demonstrated Powell’s active participation in advocating for trans rights.

Legislative Actions: Despite opposition, LB 574 passed the Nebraska Legislature with a 33-15 vote and was signed into law by Governor Jim Pillen. Additionally, a Nebraska First PAC poll revealed 61% of likely Nebraska voters supported restrictions on gender altering procedures, and 78% agreed such interventions should wait until adulthood.

Failed Expansion Attempts: In April, efforts to expand LB 574 to ban puberty blockers and hormones for minors were unsuccessful as a corresponding bill failed to advance in the legislature.

Criticism of Powell’s Views: Jon Schweppe, a senior advisor at the American Principles Project, labeled Powell’s position as radical and criticized her advocacy for transgender sex changes for minors. Zach Bannon of the NRCC echoed these sentiments, accusing Powell of being out of touch with Nebraska values.

Electoral Challenge: Powell is up against Republican Brinker Harding in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. Powell’s campaign platform includes lowering costs, protecting healthcare access and abortion rights, supporting workers, and opposing President Trump’s policies.
