Travel Advisory Raised for Ceuta Amid Migrant Influx

The U.S. State Department has elevated its Travel Advisory for Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, to Level 3, urging travelers to reconsider trips there. This escalation follows a surge of migrants entering Ceuta from Morocco, causing significant security concerns.

The advisory notes the “massive and uncontrolled arrival of migrants from Morocco to Ceuta may lead to unpredictable and dangerous security situations.” In response, Spain has dispatched its military, National Police, and Guardia Civil to manage the situation. Americans are advised to reassess travel plans due to potential safety risks.

The travel advisory specifically targets Ceuta, a self-governing Spanish city bordering Morocco. The rest of Spain is unaffected and remains under its prior advisory level. Reports indicate that about 50,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta on Thursday, although local estimates report up to 60,000 arrivals over 24 hours. Many have since returned to Morocco.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced measures to strengthen security in Ceuta, including deploying additional forces and a sea barrier to aid repatriation efforts. Spanish authorities are collaborating with Moroccan counterparts to tackle human trafficking networks.

The surge relates to a recent ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court regarding sea-borne migrants, which trafficking organizations allegedly misrepresented, causing confusion and increased arrivals.

Former President Donald Trump commented on the situation from Camp David, warning of potential similar scenarios if Republicans do not regain power in the U.S. He described the situation as looking “like an invasion” and cautioned the U.S. could face worse unless political changes occur.

Ceuta and another enclave, Melilla, are strategic points for illegal immigration into Europe due to their geographic and political status. Both remain part of the European Union despite being located on the mainland of Africa.
