Dodgers Acquire Tarik Skubal in Trade with Tigers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reached an agreement to trade with the Detroit Tigers, securing two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal for their rotation. Reports indicate the Dodgers are sending three prospects to the Tigers: Triple-A right-hander River Ryan, Double-A outfielder Zyhir Hope, and Class A right-hander Brady Smith.

Dodgers fans can expect Skubal to bolster their pitching lineup significantly. Skubal stands as the top left-handed pitcher in the league, complementing the team’s solid rotation, led by Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Signing Skubal also serves as a contingency plan for October if other pitchers, like Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, or Shohei Ohtani, are unavailable.

Alex Vesia, a Dodgers veteran, shared his surprise upon learning about the trade. “Wild. Absolutely wild,” he said, reflecting on the news delivered by his mother, making him aware of acquiring a new teammate.

Reports initially suggested right-hander Emmet Sheehan might be included in the deal. However, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Sheehan is expected to start on Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, indicating he remains on the roster.

For the Tigers, acquiring Ryan, Hope, and Smith provides a promising roster of prospects. River Ryan, though currently on the injured list with a hamstring issue, is considered major-league ready. The Dodgers successfully enhanced their rotation without impacting their existing roster or relinquishing top prospects like Josue De Paula or Christian Zazueta.

Skubal, 29, has impressive credentials, winning back-to-back American League Cy Young Awards in 2024 and 2025. He achieved a record of 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA in 2024 and 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA the following year. Additionally, his postseason performance has been outstanding, boasting a 2.04 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP over six starts.

This season, Skubal holds a record of 7-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts. He returned to play after undergoing the innovative ‘NanoNeedle’ surgery, which addressed elbow issues and enabled him to recover swiftly.

To complete the trade, the Dodgers are expected to assume the remainder of Skubal’s $9 million salary for the season. Although the threat of a lockout looms, Skubal’s agent, Scott Boras, aims to negotiate a record-breaking contract, targeting $400 million for Skubal.
