Eric Adams Faces Hostile Reception Over AI Data Center Proposal

Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams encountered a challenging audience in Wisconsin while advocating for a proposed AI data center. Attendees expressed their disapproval through boos and insults, questioning Adams’ support for the project.

During the event, one heckler shouted, “You belong in prison,” referring to Adams’ previous federal corruption case, which was dismissed. This outburst was part of an intense eight-minute interaction where residents consistently interrupted him.

“Whether we like it or not, folks, data centers are going to be here,” Adams stated, attempting to assert the inevitability of such developments.

Adams was representing PNK Group, aiming to create a 209-acre data center at a former mill site near the Wisconsin River. Many locals opposed the proposal, voicing concerns about the potential environmental impact.

One resident accused Adams of “stealing our water,” highlighting anxieties over resource usage by data centers. Others in the crowd yelled, “Get out of here!” and “Put it in your backyard!”

Adams attempted to counter the heckling by proposing a “dialogue,” emphasizing the need to embrace technology. He cited how AI aided his diabetes diagnosis as a personal defense of technological advancement.

Despite this, the audience’s response remained loud and critical. One attendee attempted to support Adams by urging the crowd to “Let him talk!”

Todd Shapiro, Adams’ chief communications officer, criticized media coverage, asserting that it failed to capture the event’s entirety. He noted that several attendees later approached Adams with gratitude and inquiries.

Shapiro reiterated Adams’ commitment to responsible investment in AI and data centers, stating they could create jobs and strengthen local economies. This reflects Adams’ broader policy support for fostering economic opportunities through tech development.
