Photographer Reflects on Capturing Spokane Wildfire Aftermath

Location and Background

Lindsey Wasson, a staff photographer for The Associated Press, has been documenting events since 2023. Her experience includes covering two Olympics, a World Cup, and various news stories across the Pacific Northwest. Recently, she photographed the aftermath of the Old Trails Fire in Spokane, Washington.

Why This Photo?

Washington experienced a historic wildfire season, and the Old Trails Fire in Spokane caused extensive damage, destroying hundreds of structures on August 1. Wasson was assigned to capture images on August 3, as residents returned to assess the damage.

Approach to Photography

Accessing disaster sites can be challenging due to police roadblocks, but Wasson began her work early, guided by local freelancer Young Kwak. With only power company employees controlling access, she was able to enter the area on foot. After about 90 minutes of capturing the destruction, she encountered Miriam and Daniel Sim. They were returning to their neighborhood and deciding whether to visit their home.

“It’s like a war zone… there’s nothing to save,” Sim remarked, reflecting on the devastation.

Capturing Human Impact

The Sims allowed Wasson to accompany them as they surveyed their damaged neighborhood. Miriam, emotional and in conversation with a loved one, gazed down West Tiffany Avenue, where homes had been demolished. Wasson carefully documented this, prioritizing the human impact of the disaster.

Photo Technique

Wasson used a Sony A1 with a 16-35mm lens at f/4.5. Miriam’s white outfit contrasted starkly against the ash-filled surroundings, enhancing the visual impact. Positioning Miriam centrally deviated from conventional advice but suited the symmetry of the scene.

Final Thoughts

The Sims, having lived in their home since 2005, faced difficult questions about rebuilding. Their story emphasizes the emotional toll of disasters, illustrating the personal and communal scope of loss.
