Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable has earned praise for his performance in his debut season. Despite many highlights, his decision in a recent game against the Cleveland Guardians was a misstep. During the game at Rate Field, Venable forgot a crucial rule, resulting in a significant cost to the team.
The incident occurred during the first inning, when White Sox starting pitcher Noah Schultz loaded the bases. This led pitching coach Zach Bove to visit the mound. Shortly thereafter, Angel Martinez, the left fielder for the Guardians, hit a two-run single.
Following this, Venable visited the mound to discuss an appeal play. He overlooked the rule that restricts a manager or coach to one mound visit per pitcher per inning, as outlined in official rule 5.10(l). A second visit necessitated Schultz’s removal from the game after facing only five batters. The substitution was particularly challenging due to the bullpen being heavily used the previous night during a 13-inning game.
David Sandlin, Schultz’s replacement, had not warmed up fully before entering play, posing a further challenge. Nonetheless, Sandlin managed to pitch effectively, completing 5 1/3 innings on 96 pitches.
Venable acknowledged his oversight, describing it as an ‘inexcusable mistake.’ His decision was driven by the goal of executing an appeal play but resulted in disrupting the team’s strategy. Despite admitting the error, Sandlin’s performance mitigated some of the potential damage, as he had been called up from Triple-A earlier that day.
The incident marked the White Sox’s fourth consecutive loss, making them the final MLB team to endure such a streak this season. They had previously not lost more than three games in a row. The team, with a record of 59-56, aimed to rebound in the following game against the Guardians, who held a record of 58-59.
