Substance Exposure in Mountainair: Investigation and Response

In Mountainair, New Mexico, three individuals have died, and nearly 20 first responders were hospitalized following exposure to an unidentified substance at a local home. State police informed Newsweek that four unresponsive individuals were initially discovered, with one receiving treatment and surviving.

During the emergency response, 18 first responders experienced symptoms such as nausea and dizziness due to contact with the substance. They were taken to a hospital for quarantine and monitoring. Two were reported in serious condition. Authorities are working with hazmat teams to identify the substance, noting it is not airborne and poses no wider public threat. “At this time, we do not know the exact cause,” Mayor Peter Nieto posted on Facebook. Incident Overview

The New Mexico State Police responded to a home at 306 Hanlon Avenue in Mountainair after reports of a suspected overdose from an unknown substance. Officers, along with the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office, found four unresponsive individuals inside the home. Authorities confirmed three had died.

Despite transporting 18 emergency personnel to nearby hospitals for exposure symptoms, officials maintained there was no perceived threat to the public. “Albuquerque Fire Rescue HazMat teams are assisting in identifying the substance,” NMSP told Newsweek. Investigators believe the substance transmits through contact and not through the air.

In a Facebook statement, Mayor Peter Nieto addressed community concerns about the ongoing drug problem. “Our first responders, law enforcement, medical personnel, and local officials work every day to protect this community and respond to difficult situations,” he wrote.
