A New York mother has shared an endearing story of how her twin daughters comfort each other to sleep. MariLuz Roth, a developmental specialist from Long Island, observed her identical twin girls, Maple and Fiona, engaging in bedtime rituals. These include chatting, reading, and cuddling, culminating in falling asleep face-to-face.
For MariLuz, this routine holds significant meaning as it mirrors the time the twins spent together in the womb. She mentioned to Newsweek, “This is how they fall asleep most nights.” She added, “It almost feels like that’s simply their default setting.” Despite the heartwarming routine, MariLuz emphasized that there is no secret method behind it. “Every family is different, and parents should do what feels right for them,” she advised. She believes the key is a consistent and predictable routine.
After dinner, the family has a routine where the twins bid goodnight to their father. They then settle with books and conversations filled with affection. A short story might extend as the family discusses pictures and invents stories together. This interaction often results in the twins naturally falling asleep after playing or reading together.
The twins have shared a close bond since infancy, starting with co-sleeping with MariLuz before moving to their room at about 10 months old. They appear happiest when close, often sleeping with their hands through crib rails. As they grew, this bond naturally evolved. “There really wasn’t one moment when they suddenly started helping each other fall asleep,” MariLuz noted. “It happened naturally.”
She shared their bedtime footage on Instagram (@doublethemilestones), which went viral, amassing 1.3 million views. Viewers responded warmly, describing the routine as “precious” and “beautiful.” At the time of filming, Fiona and Maple were just over two years old. MariLuz remembers being touched by their instinctive care for each other. “I didn’t want to interrupt it, I wanted to nurture it,” she said. “Their emotional awareness continues to surprise me.”
The twins comfort each other when upset and celebrate each other’s achievements, appearing happiest together. This evolving bond inspired MariLuz to document their lives on social media. “Capturing these moments may remind people of innocence, empathy, and love,” she shared. “In a world exposed to negativity, I hoped these moments might bring people back to something gentle and hopeful.”
