Wisconsin Democrats Choose David Crowley Over Francesca Hong for Gubernatorial Nomination

In a pivotal choice for the swing state of Wisconsin, Democrats selected Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley to represent them in the upcoming gubernatorial race. Crowley’s moderate stance prevailed over the more progressive state Rep. Francesca Hong. Despite Hong’s significant poll leads, Crowley secured the nomination with the support of retiring Governor Tony Evers and other influential party figures.

Crowley will face Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany in November. Tiffany is a House Freedom Caucus member endorsed by Donald Trump, bringing national attention to the contest. As Crowley shifts focus to the general election, questions remain about his level of moderation.

Dick Heller once commented on Crowley’s approach, noting, “We may not agree on everything, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t come to the negotiating table and figure out how we bring everybody under this big tent.”

At a unity breakfast in Middleton, Crowley expressed gratitude to Hong for her leadership and vowed to unify the party. He emphasized, “The Democrats, we are a big tent. We should not be focusing on kicking people from under, saying that they don’t belong within this tent.” Governor Evers, considered Crowley’s “secret weapon,” supported him throughout the campaign. Evers affirmed Crowley’s future role in the party, stating, “Tonight’s all about @DavidCCrowley. He’s earned this win… I am so proud of David.”

Crowley aims to present a “stark contrast” between himself and Tiffany’s policies. Crowley highlighted the battle as one between Democrats and MAGA extremists. As a Milwaukee native and former community organizer, Crowley has a compelling personal story. He rose from a working-class background to become the first Black Milwaukee County executive.

His platform encompasses affordable housing, education, healthcare, energy investments, and voting rights. He is a critic of ICE partnerships, demonstrating his progressive leanings.

Originally dropping out due to uncertainties in the race, Crowley reentered following encouragement from his wife, inspired by what she considered a divine sign. His determination paid off when Hong surged within the DSA. With Evers not seeking re-election, Democrats had the rare opportunity to nominate someone without an incumbent governor in play.

Democrats widely endorsed Crowley following his nomination. Democratic Governors Association Chair Andy Beshear extended congratulations, emphasizing Crowley’s commitment to improving the state’s economy and supporting families. Wisconsin Democratic leaders also reiterated their support, challenging Trump-endorsed Tiffany.

Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, consolidated his message against Trump’s “division and extremism.” Crowley aims to unite diverse political affiliations, believing collaboration leads to progress: “We can move Wisconsin forward… or we can bring division and extremism…” Crowley’s determination to build a broad coalition remains evident.
