Chicago Bears Left Tackle Showdown: Kiran Amegadjie vs. Jedrick Wills Jr.

In the preseason opener at Soldier Field, the Chicago Bears focused heavily on the left tackle position. Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr. shared playing time, competing for a crucial role. Though Braxton Jones is expected to start if he recovers from his injury, he was absent on Saturday. Bears coach Ben Johnson anticipates Jones’s return soon.

The Bears have invested significantly in Amegadjie, a standout 6-foot-5, 326-pound lineman from Hinsdale Central. He was drafted from Yale in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft. However, his progress was stalled due to an elbow injury, limiting his field time last season. Amegadjie remarked, “I haven’t played football in almost a year now. It was good to get some reps in.” He acknowledges areas for improvement but emphasizes his health as a critical factor in his development.

In the game, Cleveland played its starters briefly, giving Amegadjie a few plays against defensive end Jared Verse. Later, Wills allowed a sack by Cleveland’s Julian Okwara. Amegadjie faced Okwara too, but Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent avoided the sack.

Bears coach Ben Johnson commented on the need to refine the left tackle position. “I felt like our quarterback got hit more than I would like,” he said. The left tackle role requires in-depth assessment to enhance performance. Amegadjie later participated in a successful two-minute drill, gaining vital experience.

Amegadjie sees himself as effective in the run game while acknowledging the need to refine his pass protection technique. “Technique is key,” he stated, recognizing the importance of consistency.

Amegadjie’s journey from the Ivy League to the NFL includes a well-known story. His father met the former Bears coach, Matt Eberflus, at a golf course, providing Amegadjie an unexpected opportunity to connect with his future team. Amegadjie maintains confidence in his abilities despite the challenges. “I believe in myself and know that I can achieve my goals,” he asserted.
