Stephen A. Smith Criticizes NABJ for ‘Thumbs Down’ Award

ESPN host and political commentator Stephen A. Smith criticized the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) after receiving a ‘Thumbs Down’ award. During his show on Monday, Smith described this as a ‘personal hit job’ against him.

The NABJ awarded him the ‘Thumbs Down’ distinction at their gala in Atlanta, claiming his comments had disparaged prominent Black women. Smith expressed his discontent, stating that the move represented a failure in journalism from a journalistic organization.

“The reality is that it was a personal hit job,” Smith said.

Smith speculated that the award might be linked to his critique of Black female political figures, such as Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett. He attempted to contact NABJ President Errin Haines for a discussion on the issue, but no resolution came from their exchange.

He recounted a conversation with Haines, noting how she preferred a private discussion instead of a public one on his platform. This, he argued, was unfair since the accusations were made publicly.

Despite his criticisms, Smith confirmed ongoing support for NABJ. He acknowledged the role they played in his career, particularly through an ‘NABJ job fair’ early in his career.

“This is not about the NABJ,” he clarified. “This is not an indictment against them.”

Smith directed his criticism at specific board members who he believed made an unfair decision. A Media Research Center editor echoed Smith’s sentiments, calling it an example of a disconnect in ‘journalist trade groups’ from public realities.

NABJ’s presentation expressed concern over Smith’s pattern of comments which they viewed as harmful towards Black women in various fields. They noted this undermined their goals for fair representation in public discourse. The association has yet to provide a response to the award’s rationale.
