Chicago Cubs Await Return of Dansby Swanson While Navigating Injuries

The Chicago Cubs look forward to shortstop Dansby Swanson rejoining their lineup before the season ends. Swanson entered the 10-day injured list after an MRI revealed a left oblique strain, which caused him to leave the game on Sunday. The Cubs estimate that Swanson will miss about a month, aiming for his return with two weeks left in the season. This marks Swanson’s first time on the injured list since May 2024, when he experienced a right knee sprain. Manager Craig Counsell stated, “Dansby’s already ready to attack the injury and do whatever he can to make this go as quick as possible.”

Meanwhile, the Cubs have also put right-hander Edward Cabrera on the 15-day injured list due to a blister on his right middle finger. They recalled right-hander Javier Assad and outfielder Kevin Alcántara. Infielder Owen Miller was called up after infielder James Triantos was optioned. To accommodate Miller, right-hander Daniel Palencia was moved to the 60-day injured list. Palencia’s shift does not impact his return timeline, as he has been sidelined since June 16.

With Swanson out, the Cubs expect Nico Hoerner to cover the shortstop position and Pedro Ramírez at second base. Matt Shaw is expected to return from a left hand/wrist sprain before Swanson’s comeback, depending on his pregame evaluations. If all goes well, Shaw will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa. Owen Miller will serve as a backup shortstop and occasionally play first base, thereby adding versatility to the team.

Pedro Ramírez has impressed in his initial 49 games with a .299 average, .353 on-base percentage, and 120 OPS+. Counsell commented, “Pedro’s a good player, bottom line.” With more playing time, Ramírez is expected to demonstrate his abilities further.

Edward Cabrera’s season has not unfolded as planned since joining from the Miami Marlins. This marks his third time on the injured list, with a recurring blister issue complicating matters. Counsell mentioned the need to address these recurring blisters and consider limiting his outings to shorter durations. Despite the frustration, Cabrera expressed his willingness to adapt, stating, “The important thing is being here and helping the team in whatever way I can.”

The blister began affecting Cabrera during Sunday’s fourth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals, where he allowed four runs. Despite these setbacks, Cabrera remains focused on overcoming challenges and contributing to the team’s success.
