Elijah Bieniemy, 27, son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, faces charges related to the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, in Ashburn, Virginia. Mia suffered multiple gunshot wounds but is recovering in stable condition. In response to this alarming event, Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid offered his support to the Bieniemy family.
The incident occurred on July 26, prompting Eric Bieniemy’s departure from the Chiefs to be with his family. After spending time by his wife’s side, he returned to Kansas City ahead of the team’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. Bieniemy mentioned that his wife’s progress motivated his return to football, noting her resilience during her recovery.
“First and foremost, yes, she’s on a great road to recovery. Yes, she’s doing great.”
After seeing improvements in his wife’s condition, Eric returned to the Chiefs, indicating that his wife encouraged his decision and joked about ‘driving her and the family crazy’ during her recovery. He praised Mia, describing her as both a soldier and a saint.
Elijah Bieniemy underwent a mental health competency evaluation before his preliminary court hearing. He faces charges of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. His court proceedings are on hold pending the evaluation.
Eric Bieniemy expressed gratitude to the Hunt family and the entire Chiefs community for their support during this challenging time. He has been integral to the Chiefs’ recent successes, contributing to their multiple Super Bowl appearances and wins.
While based in Ashburn, Virginia, Eric closely followed the Chiefs’ activities, participating in virtual meetings and providing input remotely. This included interactions with Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid to discuss team strategies.
Bieniemy’s return has been welcomed by the team, with players like Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton expressing appreciation for his presence and competitive spirit.
