Wyoming Republicans have nominated Rep. Harriet Hageman as their candidate for the U.S. Senate. This decision came after Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis announced her retirement. Lummis, who was elected to the Senate in 2020 and served four terms in the U.S. House, will not seek another term. This opens up a seat in a state known for its strong Republican leanings.
Hageman emerged as the frontrunner from a primary contest that included former Kirby Mayor Sam Mead, Jill Edwards, John Holtz, and former environmental services business owner Jimmy Skovgard. Endorsed by President Donald Trump, Hageman enters the race as the best-known and best-funded candidate. She previously unseated former Rep. Liz Cheney in Wyoming’s Republican House primary in 2022.
Cheney was targeted by Trump for her role in investigating the January 6 Capitol riots. Alongside Rep. Adam Kinzinger, Cheney was one of the few Republicans in the House Committee focused on the riots.
Hageman now faces the Democratic contender in the general election set for November 3. Given Wyoming’s political landscape, a Democratic win seems improbable. The state is predominantly Republican, as reflected by the Cook Political Report ranking of R+23. All statewide offices in Wyoming are currently Republican-held, highlighting the party’s dominance in the state.
This Senate race is part of a broader political shift in Wyoming. For the first time in over three decades, there are open races for governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House all in the same election cycle.
