Trump’s Declining Approval Among Millennials

44 minutes ago 0

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has slipped among millennials, according to a recent Economist/YouGov poll. This trend aligns with a broader decline in support from younger Americans. The poll, conducted between August 14 and August 17, shows that only 26 percent of those aged 30 to 44 approve of his presidency. This is a decrease from 29 percent the previous week, marking the fifth consecutive week of either decline or steady numbers.

The poll also indicates that Trump’s overall approval stands at 35 percent, with 61 percent disapproving of his performance. It involved 1,611 U.S. adults and holds a margin of error of 3.4 percent. In response, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales highlighted achievements such as the largest middle-class tax cuts, lowered prescription drug costs, border security accomplishments, reduced violent crime, and economic growth.

Additional policy achievements noted by a White House official include significant decreases in violent crime reported by the FBI, consistent handling of migration at the border, and significant reductions in prescription drug prices, as reported by numerous sources.

Why Millennial Votes Matter

Millennials, defined as those born from 1981 to 1996, have now surpassed baby boomers as the largest demographic group. Both President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaigns have aimed to engage millennials through podcasts and digital platforms, a strategy highlighted during the 2024 campaign cycle.

What To Know

The Economist/YouGov poll reveals that younger Americans have a particularly negative view of Trump’s presidency. Those aged 18 to 29 show that 30 percent approve of his performance, while 67 percent disapprove. Among the 30 to 44 age group, 26 percent approve, and 70 percent disapprove.

Additionally, the poll shows that only 24 percent of those aged 18 to 29 approve of Trump’s foreign policy, with similar trends seen in his tariff policies.

The decline in support among millennials is significant as Trump approaches the 2026 midterm elections. An earlier YouGov report showed a 33 percent overall approval rating with a 62 percent disapproval. Despite a slight improvement to a 35 percent approval rating, younger voters’ attitudes remain an important factor.

What Other Polls Show

An Echelon Insights poll shows Trump’s overall approval at 40 percent, with a 59 percent disapproval. Among the 18–34 age group, 28 percent approve and 72 percent disapprove. A Reuters/Ipsos poll supports similar findings, showing a 33 percent approval and 64 percent disapproval.

The data continue to signal a challenging landscape for President Trump, especially as millennials form a critical voter segment.
