Democrats are seeing improved chances of winning two traditionally Republican Senate seats, according to Fox News’ latest electoral rankings. This shift could boost the party’s efforts to regain control of the Senate in the upcoming November elections. Fox News has now marked the Senate races in Kansas and Texas as more competitive, highlighting these states as targets for Democrats seeking a majority.
Electoral Landscape
Facing the challenge of gaining four seats while defending their incumbents, Democrats have identified economic issues, the ongoing Iran war, and declining approval ratings for President Donald Trump as opportunities to gain ground in Republican-held areas. The current Senate stands with a 53-47 Republican majority.
Despite progress in Kansas and Texas, Democrats have lost some ground in Michigan, with Fox News labeling the race a “Toss Up” rather than “Lean Democrat.” These shifts underscore the dynamic nature of the Senate races as Election Day nears.
Primary Elections and Candidate Dynamics
Recent high-profile primaries have dramatically reshaped the Senate map. Progressive candidates like former Michigan health official Abdul El-Sayed have secured nominations, with establishment-backed candidates prevailing elsewhere. In Texas, Ken Paxton’s primary win over Senator John Cornyn added uncertainty to a once reliably Republican race. Meanwhile, in Maine, controversy led to Democrat Graham Platner’s exit from his race.
Matt Klink, a Republican strategist, notes that “Candidate quality is deciding toss-ups more than the national political environment.” In Texas, issues surrounding Ken Paxton, including his impeachment trial, have turned the race into a referendum on his character as much as on his party affiliation.
Texas Senate Race
The Texas Senate race between Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic state Representative James Talarico is nearly tied in polls. Texas has not elected a Democrat to a statewide office since 1994. However, demographic shifts in the state have prompted Democrats to target it in recent elections.
Fox News moved Texas into the “toss up” column, aligning it with other competitive races such as those in Michigan and Iowa. Surveys show both Paxton and Talarico with narrow leads at different times. A Fox News poll found 51% of respondents supporting Talarico and 48% backing Paxton.
Other polls show similar levels of competition, with surveys showing slight variations within their margin of error. RealClearPolling’s average places Talarico slightly ahead by 1.2 percentage points.
Kansas Senate Race
Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton is among Kansas’ strongest fundraisers in recent years, yet faces challenges against Republican Senator Roger Marshall in a state that last elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1932. Fox News rates the race as “Likely Republican,” suggesting potential Democratic gains.
Polling is scarce, but Democratic-sponsored surveys indicate close competition. A Public Policy Polling survey put Marshall at 46% and Hamilton at 45%. Another poll by Tavern Research showed Marshall with an 8% lead.
Michigan Senate Race
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers are vying for an open Senate seat in Michigan. Although Democrats have held this seat for years, Michigan remains a highly competitive battleground state.
Recent polling by Fox News shows Rogers leading at 51% compared to El-Sayed’s 47%. Other surveys conducted before the primary indicate a close race, with polling outcomes fluctuating within their margins of error.
