Adding salt to the wound, Brent Venables, Swinney’s former defensive coordinator, led the Oklahoma Sooners to their own CFP appearance recently. Despite blowing a lead against Alabama, optimism prevails in Norman thanks to players like quarterback John Mateer. In contrast, Clemson’s outlook feels more uncertain, especially considering this year is the first in 15 years they begin unranked.

Nick Saban, echoing these sentiments on “The Pat McAfee Show,” expressed skepticism about Clemson’s upcoming season. With numerous questions regarding the quarterback position and other gaps needing attention, the Tigers are far from the standard set in previous years. If these challenges persist, Swinney’s reputation might further diminish.
