Prince Harry and Meghan’s Return to the UK: A Complex Situation

54 minutes ago 0

Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, plan a return to the United Kingdom, but they will not reassume their roles as working members of the royal family. This was reported by British news media on Wednesday.

Their children, Prince Archie, aged 7, and Princess Lilibet, aged 5, have enrolled in British schools with classes starting in September, according to the Daily Telegraph, which broke the story. The family intends to reside in a private, non-royal residence outside London.

Harry and Meghan relinquished their royal duties and moved to California over six years ago, engaging in profitable deals with Netflix and Spotify. Relations with the royal family have been strained since their move, but Harry has shown interest in reconciliation to spend more time with his father, King Charles III, who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.

Charles learned of their plans on Sunday, having not been informed during Harry and Meghan’s recent visit to the UK. Buckingham Palace avoids commenting on non-working royal family members, while a representative for Harry and Meghan has declined to comment.

The couple’s relationship with the royal family has been rocky since they relocated to Montecito, California. In interviews and Harry’s memoir “Spare,” they shared their decision to leave royal life due to its restrictions and criticized palace officials for poor handling of Meghan’s mental health. Additionally, they accused a royal family member of expressing racist views during Meghan’s pregnancy with their first child.

Harry has faced legal battles with British tabloid newspapers, alleging phone hacking and privacy invasion. Recent rulings have seen Harry facing substantial legal fees, including a court ruling requiring him to pay significant costs after losing to the publisher of the Daily Mail. Associated Newspapers claim their legal costs reached 34.5 million pounds ($47 million).

Another legal conflict involves Harry’s fight for police protection in the UK. Security was denied by a government committee, despite Harry arguing his family’s risk due to their royal status. After losing a court battle regarding security last year, Harry expressed a desire to repair familial relations.

Harry returned to the UK last month for charity engagements and was joined by Meghan and their children. They met King Charles III, marking the first time Archie and Lilibet had seen him since Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee in 2022.

Despite meeting his father, Harry’s relations with his brother, Prince William, remain cold. Peter Hunt, a former BBC royal correspondent, suggests William might be “apoplectic” over recent developments, though Harry’s presence in the UK could pressure William towards reconciliation.
