The Power of Kindness and Connection

1 hour ago 0

Jake Berry, a freshman in college 25 years ago, faced an unexpected and difficult moment when he learned a close friend, Jack, had been hospitalized without a clear cause. In the early days of texting, Berry anxiously awaited phone calls to hear updates about Jack’s condition. It was a Thursday night, typically a time for social outings, but Berry chose solitude in his dorm room to process the news.

As the night stretched on, his friend Jess visited, accompanied by Kim and Corey, two friends visiting for the weekend. Upon hearing Berry’s situation, Kim and Corey took immediate action. They retrieved their car, picked Berry up, and drove him north to his hometown, where friends were gathering.

Brought together by Jack’s situation, Berry joined friends to share the night in support and reflection. He described it as a time to cry and bond with friends who are now lifelong companions. Berry expressed gratitude for those moments, saying, “I think back to how much I would have missed if I hadn’t been there that night.”

Jack’s health later clarified with a lymphoma diagnosis, and he passed away about a year later. Despite the loss, the friendship circle, forged during that testing time, remains strong in Berry’s life. He and many of those friends returned to their hometown, raising families and sharing life’s ups and downs.

Although Berry lost touch with Kim, Corey, and Jess, he still remembers their selfless gesture, hoping their kindness has returned to them multiplied. The community formed in those difficult days continues to be a significant part of Berry’s world.
