In a milestone moment, Adam Copeland and Christian Cage claimed the tag team championship title for the first time in 25 years. They achieved this feat by defeating FTR in an intense I Quit match at the Double or Nothing event. Since then, they have dominated the tag team division, overcoming formidable challengers like The Death Riders and The Dogs.
This successful run aligns perfectly with Copeland’s aspirations when he joined All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He was determined to avoid a nostalgic routine, instead aiming to explore new heights in his career.
“It’s like we’re a team again, but we’re an entirely different team and we should be because we’ve experienced so much,” Copeland stated in an interview with Fox News Digital. “To just do a nostalgia run, that didn’t feel right.”
Copeland and Cage have reinvented themselves, opting to craft an identity distinct from their past. They introduced a new finishing move, departing from their earlier illegal move, the concerto.
Before the Forbidden Door event, they debuted a pop-up spear as a finishing move at the O2 Arena in London, marking their first match together in 15 years. It proved effective and demonstrated their evolution as a team.
Looking ahead, they are set to face the Young Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson, at the All In event with the AEW World Tag Team Championship title on the line. Copeland had previously expressed a desire to wrestle this team, placing the Young Bucks on his list of desired opponents.
“The Young Bucks were on the list from the time that any kind of reality of me and AEW started,” Copeland remarked. “They were definitely on the list, but also too, didn’t fully know if Christian and I were going to get back to teaming.”
Copeland described the journey as thrilling and highlighted a significant match against Mox, which catalyzed the reunion with Cage. This moment allowed the duo to explore each other’s characters in a fresh context.
“When I think of a word, the only one that comes to mind is we’ve just been having fun,” Copeland reflected on their partnership.
The All In event is scheduled for August 30 at Wembley Stadium in London, promising another exciting chapter in the careers of Copeland and Cage.
