Max Verstappen has committed to continuing his journey with Red Bull, extending his contract for four more years. This announcement comes ahead of his home Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort and dismisses rumors that Verstappen might move to another team or retire from Formula 1.
Despite Red Bull’s current challenges in keeping pace with Mercedes, Verstappen remains dedicated to racing. He expressed concerns about the reliance on electrical power in the 2026 cars. However, discussions with Formula 1 and FIA officials have reassured him that improvements are on the horizon. The new contract extends until 2030 and leaves room for a potential return to simpler V8 engines, even though it is not confirmed.
“Even if I’m not entirely happy with how the package is, I still love racing,” Verstappen stated. He emphasized the importance of the sport and his continued desire to compete at its highest level. When questioned about speaking to other teams, Verstappen admitted he considered retiring rather than switching teams.
If he completes his contract, Verstappen will achieve a 15-season collaboration with Red Bull, the longest driver-team pairing in Formula 1 history. The support for team principal Laurent Mekies is strong, especially after Mekies succeeded Christian Horner as team boss last year. Mekies described Verstappen as more than the fastest driver, stating, “He’s the central point of the team.” This mutual commitment aims to build another winning cycle.
Despite being regarded as one of the all-time greats at the age of 28, Verstappen has yet to secure a race victory this season. He has maintained a winning record each season since his rookie year in 2015.
Speculation Around Verstappen’s Future
Verstappen’s earlier contract, which extended until 2028, reportedly included performance-related clauses that could have allowed him to leave sooner. These clauses fueled speculation about his future. Red Bull has supported Verstappen since his early days, bringing him into F1 at 17 with its second team, Toro Rosso, setting the record for the youngest driver in the series.
Recent years have seen some tension within the team, including key departures such as Adrian Newey. Concerns were raised over safety after two high-speed crashes stemming from faults in the Red Bull car’s rear wing.
Verstappen was linked to a move to McLaren following reports of a meeting with McLaren’s management. However, McLaren CEO Zak Brown asserted no vacancy for Verstappen, as the team is committed to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Mercedes also showed past interest, with driver George Russell expressing confidence in his security within the team led by Toto Wolff.
On the potential replacement front, Carlos Sainz Jr. signed a contract with Williams, quelling rumors of him filling Verstappen’s seat at Red Bull.
