Safety Concerns in Wisconsin Schools

High school athlete Ella Frei expressed concerns regarding Wisconsin school policies on transgender locker rooms. She described feeling unsafe sharing private spaces with a male student in 2022. Despite voicing her discomfort to the school board, her concerns were dismissed. Frei, along with women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines, has publicly challenged the policy.

Legal Action Against Norfolk Police Department

Meghan Grabow, a former police officer in Norfolk, Virginia, has filed a lawsuit against the city and its police chief. The suit stems from an August 2024 incident where Grabow was changing in the women’s locker room while a recruit described as a “biological male who identifies as a woman” entered the room in a suit and tie. Grabow claims she was told to “deal with it” or find another locker room when she expressed discomfort to her superiors.

Retaliation and Suspension Allegations

Grabow reported retaliation and suspension after complaining about the situation. She claims that the department’s leadership instructed officers to refer to the recruit as “she” and allowed the recruit to use the restroom corresponding to her gender identity. Other officers also voiced concerns, highlighting inadequate warnings about sharing facilities.

Seeking Compensation and Defending Rights

As part of her lawsuit, Grabow seeks $15 million in compensatory damages. She alleges emotional distress and violation of her religious freedoms. Her attorney, Scott Lloyd, emphasized the importance of defending private spaces for women. The Norfolk Police Department declined to comment, citing the pending litigation.

Norfolk Police Department Guidelines

Under 2020 guidelines, Norfolk Police Department employees are instructed to respect individuals’ gender identities and expressions. These guidelines discourage questioning a transgender person’s identity without specific, related reasons.
