The German government has accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted attack using a drone loaded with explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month. The incident led to the decision to close a Russian consulate and implement further measures.
Drone Incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport
On August 4, a drone was discovered near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The device was defused successfully. This incident marked a new level of danger according to German officials.
Moscow is broadly accused by Western authorities of conducting sabotage campaigns to weaken support for Ukraine and destabilize European nations.
Evidence Points to Russian Operation
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that elements of the drone, such as configuration, components, explosives, and detonator, align with other Russian hybrid operations. He noted the technical expertise and planning involved, while execution was left to lower-level agents.
Dobrindt cited intelligence suggesting the involvement of individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities.
Germany Closes Russian Consulate
Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn effective September 18 due to the attempted drone attack. Additionally, the contract for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin will be terminated.
Germany plans to add more Russian individuals to the EU sanctions list related to hybrid attacks, enhance entry controls, and apply pressure on the ‘shadow fleet’ suspected of shipping Russian oil illicitly.
The Russian ambassador was called to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin following these developments.
Russian Response and Denial
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova promised a ‘fitting response’ to the closures and dismissed claims of Russian involvement as contrived.
Sabotage Incidents Across Europe
Leipzig/Halle Airport is a key hub for international freight and supporting Ukraine, hosting regular flights by Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft.
NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution operates daily deliveries to NATO battle groups on Europe’s eastern flank.
In 2024, an incendiary device ignited at the airport’s logistics center, suspected to be part of a plot by Russian intelligence.
Western officials have attributed approximately 200 sabotage incidents across Europe to Russia, including plots to set fires, drone attacks, and various cyberattacks.
EU’s Sanctions Against Russia
The EU has imposed nearly two dozen sanction packages on Russia, targeting around 3,000 individuals and entities.
EU foreign ministers are set to meet in Ireland to address the ongoing situation. Ursula von der Leyen stated that hybrid attacks would be met with a clear response.
Germany’s Cabinet approved proposals to grant intelligence services broader powers against sabotage and hacking, pending parliamentary approval.
Poland’s Recent Sabotage Incidents
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated a recent increase in sabotage acts targeting Poland, including arson. A fire at WB Electronics, a significant drone manufacturer, caused significant damage.
Polish prosecutors have started investigations, suspecting foreign intelligence activity but have not specified the responsible country.
