Minneapolis police are addressing a shooting incident near 15 East Grant Street that has resulted in multiple injuries, including two police officers. Residents received an alert advising them to avoid the area as the situation unfolded. According to sources and scanner audio, a suspect is reportedly down, and a high-ranking official has indicated that the injured officers are expected to recover.
The intersection of Nicollet and Grant became the focal point for a massive response from law enforcement agencies beyond the Minneapolis Police Department. Support arrived from various agencies including St. Louis Park, Edina, the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota State Patrol, transit police, and sheriff’s deputies from surrounding areas. St. Paul’s ATF field division confirmed special agents responded to the scene as well.
The Minneapolis Police Department urged the public to avoid the vicinity bordered by 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South. “My public safety team is responding to a shooting that took place in downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,”
stated Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. “State officials are on the ground to support local law enforcement, and more information will be shared as it becomes available.”
FBI Director Kash Patel expressed awareness of the incident and promised to provide full support to local authorities.
Observations at the apartment complex on Grant Street revealed officers with long guns strategically positioned around the building. Heavy armored SWAT vehicles and ambulances were stationed in the area, while stretchers were used to transport those injured, some with apparent leg injuries. The status of other victims remains unclear.
Reporter Conor Wight noted nearby onlookers watching the eighth floor of the complex. Reports suggested that residents remained in their units as police managed the scene. Witness Abdiwakil Mohamed, from south Minneapolis, recounted hearing gunfire as he drove on La Salle Avenue. He observed three shots, indicative of a rifle, followed by a police officer being shot in their vehicle, leading to a collision with another car. Mohamed reported that the attacker continued to fire from a high point, prompting a swift and wide-ranging police response.
This situation is ongoing. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
