Former NFL quarterback and ex-Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez has filed a motion to plead guilty related to an incident in October 2025 involving a truck driver. The event led to Sanchez being stabbed outside an Indianapolis hotel, according to court documents.
The specific charges Sanchez plans to plead guilty to are not immediately clear. He is currently facing a felony battery charge and multiple misdemeanors, such as unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication. The motion for a guilty plea and sentencing hearing was submitted on Thursday at Marion County, Indiana, Superior Court. A judge’s approval is required for the plea.
“This is a positive development. We are finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor’s office that provides a path toward resolving the state’s case. We’re also encouraged by the constructive conversations taking place regarding the related civil matter. There is real momentum toward bringing this entire chapter to a close,” stated Nick Sanchez Jr., Mark Sanchez’s brother and legal adviser, in a statement to CBS News.
The ex-NFL quarterback’s jury trial was initially set to start in December but had been rescheduled five times. The trial was scheduled for Tuesday.
A police affidavit claimed that Sanchez, present in town as a Fox Sports analyst for the Colts vs. Raiders game at Lucas Oil Stadium, confronted 69-year-old Perry Tole. Tole had parked his truck in a hotel loading dock in downtown Indianapolis on October 4, 2025. Allegedly, Sanchez entered the truck without Tole’s consent, physically blocked Tole from accessing the vehicle, and attempted to seize his phone.
Tole told police he “realized things had escalated, and he was now in physical danger” and subsequently used pepper spray on Sanchez.
Upon being sprayed, Sanchez reportedly advanced toward Tole, prompting Tole to defend himself with a knife, resulting in Sanchez being stabbed two or three times. Sanchez was hospitalized with stab wounds to his upper right torso.
After the incident, an image of Tole surfaced online showing him in a neck brace and covered in blood, with a deep facial slash. Tole accused Sanchez, also filing a civil lawsuit against him and Fox, stating Sanchez smelled of alcohol and spoke with slurred speech before the altercation.
Attorney Matt Golitko, representing Tole, expressed satisfaction with the dialogue with Sanchez’s team: “We are pleased with the constructive and professional conversations we’ve had with Mr. Sanchez’s team. Our discussions have been productive and we’re on a positive path toward an agreement that will allow the parties to move forward. Mr. Tole appreciates the progress we have achieved and looks forward to an amicable resolution.”
Sanchez, who played in the NFL for a decade before retiring in 2019, was dismissed from Fox Sports after the incident. His professional football career began with the New York Jets. He subsequently played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and Washington.
