Researchers have recently uncovered a medieval convent beneath a soccer field in Roskilde, Denmark. The discovery was made using ground-penetrating radar during preparations for an underground parking facility. This significant find, announced by ROMU, a Danish museum organization, highlights the site’s historical importance.
The Discovery Details
The radar survey revealed the remains of St. Clare’s Convent. Built in the 13th century, the convent was found approximately three feet below ground. The scans showed traces of various building components, including rooms, columns, cloisters, and a church located in the southern wing. The eastern wing, in particular, is noted for its well-preserved rooms and vault pillars.
This convent is one of five monastic sites in medieval Roskilde, and it was not protected due to its assumed loss.
Excavation Plans
Archaeologists plan to work with local authorities for trial excavations at the parking site. St. Clare’s Convent, a large complex measuring roughly 230 by 230 feet, was demolished in the 16th century. However, substantial portions of its foundations remain.
Anticipated Discoveries
Archaeologists expect to find a variety of artifacts. Potential findings include pottery sherds, animal bones, religious objects like pendant crosses, rosary beads, and artifacts related to medieval literacy. If organic remains have survived, they may offer insights into nun diets and convent gardens.
Langkilde, an archaeologist involved with the project, emphasized the convent’s potential for revealing more about Roskilde’s historical monasteries. Initial nuns possibly came from a Strasbourg convent, pointing to international ties.
Significance
This discovery contributes to understanding medieval monasteries and highlights the role of convents in town development. Langkilde expressed excitement over the radar technology’s effectiveness without physical excavation.
